Sakura Tours
Sakura viewing, or hanami, is a popular activity in Japan during the spring season. Saitama, a prefecture located in the Kanto region, is known for its beautiful cherry blossom trees. One of the best places to view sakura is near the Shinmei Bridge on the Motoara River in Koshigaya.
When to Go: The best time to view sakura in Japan is from February until May. The exact timing can vary depending on the weather conditions each year and location. It’s best to check the regional sakura forecast before planning your trip.
How to get there
Koshigaya is easily accessible by train from Tokyo. Take the JR Musashino Line to Koshigaya Station, then transfer to the Tobu Skytree Line and exit the train at Shin-Koshigaya Station. From there, it’s a short walk to the Shinmei Bridge on the Motoara River.
There are several activities to enjoy while sakura viewing. Here are some ideas:
- Take a riverboat cruise: Visitors can enjoy a riverboat cruise along the Motoara River, which offers a unique perspective of the cherry blossom trees.
- Be sure to take plenty of photos. The retro bridges near the river offer great photo opportunities, especially at night when the cherry blossoms are lit up with lanterns.
- Attend the cherry blossom festival: Koshigaya holds an annual cherry blossom festival during the sakura season. Visitors can enjoy food stalls, live music, and other entertainment.
Other sakura viewing places
If you have time, consider visiting other sakura viewing spots in Saitama. Here are some recommendations:
Kumagaya Sakura Tsutsumi: This is a cherry blossom-filled group of streets in the Nagatoro area of Saitama. It is famous because of the sheer amount of cherry blossoms — over 1,500 trees — and constantly appears on Top 100 Cherry Blossom lists[3][4].
Shingashi River: This is a picturesque location with over 100 Homarezakura and Someiyoshino cherry blossom trees along its 500-meter stretch. The trees were planted in 1957 as a memorial to those who lost their lives in the war and are located close to the Hikawa Shrine[2].
